Inaugural Youth Summit geared toward Empowerment and Education- PM

“One cannot become an engineer, a teacher, a business person or entrepreneur without the requisite guidance, training, education and exposure. It is the embracing of opportunities for education, networking, skills-enhancement and overall empowerment that will allow youths in particular and the individual in general, to fully realise the fundamental human right to choose and enjoyment of work.”

This was the pronouncement by Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, this morning, at the Inaugural Youth Business Summit, held at the Guyana Pegasus Hotel.

Prime Minister Nagamootoo told those in attendance that the forum provides them with the resources, tools, networking opportunities and training that will ensure success in entrepreneurship and success as an employed professional in a field of their choice.

Speaking on the draft Youth Policy, the Prime Minister said the administration has crafted a plan that aims to advance and empower youths in the political, social, cultural and economic spheres. Thereby placing them at the centre of Guyana’s development.

The policy, Prime Minister Nagamootoo said is grounded in the Constitution of Guyana and draws on the direction and best practices from various regional and international groups. Bodies such as the Caricom Youth and Development Action Plan, the International Labour Organisation, the United Nations, the World Programme of Action for Youth.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the Labour Laws that govern businesses. He spoke on areas such as the Prevention of Discrimination Act, the Holidays with Pay Act No. 6 of 1995, The Termination of Employment and Severance Pay Act Cap 99:08 (TESPA) and The Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Act No.32 of 1997 among others.

The Prime Minister wished the participants at the Summit success.
