The second edition of Magnum ‘Mash Cup’ Inter-Ward futsal championship, was officially launched today and will kick off on February 2 at the National Gymnasium.

Thirty-two of the best futsal teams from across the country will compete for the top prizes. The competition is expected to be action packed following a significant boost from the National Sports Commission (NSC).

Speaking at the launch which was held at the Windjammer Hotel, Director of Sports Christopher Jones explained that the “NSC is heartened by the tournament and level of competition we would have seen in 2018 and for that reason, the National Sports Commission has decided to contribute $300,000 to increase the previous prizes.”

According to Jones, the teams will now be competing for $600,000, $350,000 and $200,000 for first, second and third place respectively along with trophies. He noted this initiative is one that the government is happy to be part of since it demonstrates the commitment and determination of those participating in the tournament.

“We will continue to stress the importance of young people being involved in sporting activities and that is why through investment from the government we continue to make facilities available to them so that they can practice,” the Sports Director added.

The spokesperson for Legacy Entertainment, Esan Griffith, one of the members of the Organising Committee said this year’s competition will be bigger and better compared to last year. He urged all teams to bring their A-game.

“This tournament will bring a sense of cohesion among the players and fans, as a whole. I want to encourage family and friends to come out and support the teams from their respective community, as the promoters, we want to assure you that security is our top priority,” Griffith said.  He noted that they expect keen competition, discipline and respect for thee teams as they compete, much like last year.
