Min. Patterson commits more LED lights for Essequibo villages
DPI, Guyana, Saturday, November 16, 2019
Residents in the Region 2 communities of Sparta and Danielstown will soon benefit from the installation of new light-emitting-diode [LED] lights, from the Ministry of Public Infrastructure.
The initiative is one of the main outcomes following a fruitful meeting hosted by the Minister of Public Infrastructure, Hon. David Patterson, at Sparta Primary School on the Essequibo Coast.
Minister Patterson pledged to handover 10 LED lights to the communities. The move will complement a $12M lighting project, executed by the ministry, to have lights installed from Maria’s Lodge to Cullen.
Once completed, the project will see 110 lamps installed along the carriageway to fill the gaps where there may have been inadequate lighting. Queenstown has been one of the communities in Region 2 to receive 35 LED lights after Minister Patterson engaged residents of that community in May 2019.
The move to use of more energy-efficient LED lights instead of the high-pressure sodium vapour lamps is part of the ministry’s goal to utilise environmentally friendly devices.
Additionally, incorporating LED lights on the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) grid is in keeping with Guyana’s Green State Development Strategy (GSDS): Vision 2040, as well as the country’s obligations, under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7, that seeks to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.
