The Volunteer Youth Corps (VYC) Thursday afternoon came in for heavy praise from Minister within the Ministry of the Presidency with responsibility for Youth Affairs, Simona Broomes.

This was during a visit to the non-government, not-for–profit organization of young people, who offer their time and talents for youth development.

“I’m impressed with what I’m hearing,” the minister declared.

At the organization’s D’urban Backlands headquarters Minister Broomes held talks with VYC’s Chief Executive Officer, Goldie Scott, and other staff members before meeting and interacting with students.

During their interaction, the minister noted the importance of non-governmental organizations.

“Instead of government establishing new institutes, there are already some established that we can partner with, these institutes are very important,” Minister Broomes reasoned.

The Minister advised CEO Scott to make a proposal to the Ministry of the Presidency for assistance.

VYC offers several programs aimed at youth development inclusive of:

  • Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Guyana
  • Guyana Civil Society Leadership Project
  • Interactive Math and Science Program
  • National Career Guidance Program
  • Youth Empowerment Project
  • Women’s Empowerment Project

Academic programmes are offered to students who were not successful at CSEC or who would have otherwise been deprived of sitting these exams.

The Women’s Empowerment Program seeks to enhance opportunities for women to start their own businesses.

Before concluding her visit Minister Broomes reiterated her commitment to work with VYC and other similar organizations to ensure young people strive and succeed.
