“Newly acquired skills prepare you for Guyana’s changing Industrial Sector” – CEO of BIT

– 99 graduate BIT Programme at GuySuCo Training Center

– 66 Distinction and 28 credits in passes

DPI, Guyana, Friday, July 5, 2019

More than 90 students from the GuySuCo Training Center in Port Mourant, are now certified by the Board of Industrial Training (BIT) and prepared to head out into the world of work.

The BIT graduates who were in high spirits on Thursday, July 4, received 66 distinctions and 28 credits in five programmes, including, Welding and Fabrication, Refrigeration, Electrical Installation, Motor Vehicle Servicing and Repairs and Heavy- Duty Machinery.

In his remarks, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of BIT, Richard Maughn encouraged the graduates to continue striving forward to realise their full potential. He noted that while some may gain employment with various companies, the avenue of self-employment is always open to BIT graduates.

Director for the Council of Technical and Vocational Education Training (CTVET), Floyd Scott said the BIT programmes have benefitted many who now ply their trade in Guyana and throughout the Caribbean.

Over eight years, more than 900 youths attached to the GuySuCo Training Centre have completed the BIT Programme and have either launched their businesses or secured employment at several companies.

Speaking to the Department of Public Information (DPI), Valedictorian, Chanderdatt Lawtoo said the “BIT programme is vital as it provides many youths with skills-training making them marketable.” Another graduate, Cassie Yorrick said, with the foundation laid by BIT, she plans to pursue further studies at the University of Guyana (UG). Many of them said they will now build on this experience

In 2018, more than 2,000 persons throughout the ten administrative regions completed course from BIT, with Region 1, accounting for the most participants. Over 40% of the graduates have become employed or started their business venture while the remaining have pursued further studies.
