Pres. Granger invites opposition leader for talks

President David Granger has dispatched an invitation to the office of the Opposition Leader, Bharat Jagdeo inviting him for discussions on the nominees for Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM)

According to a letter addressed to Opposition Chief Whip, Gail Teixeira, Director-General of the Ministry of the Presidency, Joseph Harmon said the Head of State Excellency proposed Thursday, July 4, 2019, at 3pm (15:00 hrs) for the meeting at the Ministry of the Presidency.

In his letter, DG Harmon acknowledged receipt of a letter from Teixeira dated June 25, 2019. In that letter, the topic of discussion was the appointment of a new Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Chairman.

In this latest correspondence dated July 3rd 2019, the Director-General noted that the possibility of the meeting was based on the “availability of the Leader of the Opposition”.
