Press Release – Senior Vice-President of GCCI calls on Foreign Minister

On Wednesday, September 30, 2020, Senior Vice-President of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), Mr. Timothy Tucker, conveyed congratulations to Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honourable Hugh Todd, on his recent appointment.

Mr. Tucker noted that the Chamber has long been a staunch advocate of Guyana’s foreign policy particularly in the area of trade. The Senior Vice-President also highlighted how the local private sector has benefited from the Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with countries where Guyana has an established presence. According to Mr. Tucker, the GCCI is keen to enhance its working relationship with the Government to navigate challenges faced by the private sector such as regional barriers to trade.

On his part, the Foreign Minister assured Mr. Tucker that His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, understands the challenges faced by the private sector and is committed to addressing issues such as barriers to market access promptly. Minister Todd added that His Excellency the President has a vision for diversification and that GCCI and other partners have a vital role to play in bringing about the necessary changes.

Further, the Minister stated that agreements such as the recently inked Framework to Strengthen Energy and Infrastructure, Finance and Market Building Cooperation between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of the Co -operative Republic of Guyana will help to bolster the sector and provide access to financing.

They also discussed diaspora engagement, development, and the need for increased engagements between the Government and private sector, as Guyana further develops its trade profile.
