The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China celebrated its Chinese Lunar New Year and Spring Festival with a Dinner and Cultural presentation last evening.

In his address at the event, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo reasserted Guyana’s support and commitment to the Belt and Road Initiative and other projects.

“A recent high point in these relations is the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation within the framework of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Initiative which our two countries signed last July. The Belt and Road initiative is a strong indicator of China’s transformative vision for the world; Guyana not only supports this Initiative but stands to benefit from it.”

He further highlighted the role China has played in helping to boost other sectors of Guyana.

“Another high-point in our relations was the visit of His Excellency Wang Yi, State Councillor and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China last September. Important bilateral discussions were held with President David Granger and Minister of Foreign Affairs Carl Greenidge. Minister Wang Yi’s visit has given a boost to Guyana’s ICT, as well as our Public Service and Security Sectors.”

His Excellency Cui Jianchun Chinese Ambassador to Guyana spoke on the various developments and growth that China has undergone despite the various challenges they have faced over the years.

“Defying economic difficulties and downward pressure china achieved a medium-high GDP growth rate of 6.6 percent. This year is the year of the pig, which is the twelfth of the 12-year cycle of animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac and is said to represent luck, overall good fortune, wealth, honesty, general prosperity
