DPI, Guyana, Tuesday Monday, July 23, 2019

Developmental work on the Queenstown Community Centre in Essequibo, Region 2 are progressing and are expected to be completed within two months.

The rehabilitation of the centre and the accompanying ground will benefit more than 300 young people attached in Queenstown and surrounding communities within Pomeroon- Supenaam.

This was disclosed by Fitzroy Fredericks, President of the Queenstown Development Association, during a visit to the site on July 17 by the Minister of Social Cohesion, Hon. Dr. George Norton and a team.

He explained that phase one of the project will entail the complete modernisation of the centre, installation of sanitary facilities in the centre and ground and changing rooms and the fencing of the ground.

“We are currently designing the interior part of the Queenstown Community Centre. We are installing the roof, tiling the floors and soon the workers will fence the ground,” Fredericks told the Department of Public Information (DPI).

Phase two will see the upgrading of the ground and the establishment of a pavilion and stage.

With the overhaul of the centre and grounds, Fredericks noted that youths will be able to participate in both outdoor and indoor sporting activities, including basketball, cricket and football as well as boxing and table tennis.

Following an inspection of the developmental works done thus far, Minister Norton said he is pleased with the project’s progress. He emphasised that visits such as these are crucial to ensure the department’s project are being executed correctly and on time.

“We are going to insist that whatever project we undertake we would want to be a part of it… to ensure that proper work is done and it is done on time to benefit the people as promised by our Coalition Government,” the minister explained.

It was during an outreach to the region in May of this year that Director of Sport, Christopher Jones disclosed that several projects were going to be undertaken to upgrade playfields and other sports facilities in the region. Jones said Lima Sands, Rivertown, Onderneeming Sand, Westbury, Good Hope and Lima community grounds are all selected for much-need rehabilitation works. He also indicated that the respective grounds are under different stages of infrastructural development. It was noted at that meeting that rehabilitative works had already begun on the Queenstown Centre.
