Some 100 Aranaputa residents to gain water access by end of June
(Georgetown, Monday, June 10, 2019) – Some 100 residents of Aranaputa in the North Rupununi of Region 9 will soon benefit from first time access to potable water following the drilling of a new well and the installation of a new Photovoltaic system in the community.
Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) is working along with the Aranaputa Village Council to install distribution mains by the end of June, 2019, at which point the residents will benefit from water access.
A team of GWI officials led by Managing Director, Dr. Richard Van West-Charles visited the community on Friday, 7th June, 2019 to assess the progress made to date.
Another major section of the community will benefit from first time and improved access to potable water under a Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF) programme geared towards improving the water system in the community. This project includes the installation of a distribution network and the construction of additional infrastructure and will be completed in 2019.
GWI’s Managing Director, Dr. Richard Van West-Charles and other senior company officials have thus far visited some 33 communities in Region 9 in an effort to assess access to potable water.
This is in their quest to provide adequate access to potable water in hinterland regions, as on the Coastal areas. Following their assessments, interventions were made in communities in North, South and Central Rupununi.
Among the works already completed are the drilling of wells in Aishalton, Sand Creek, Kanuku, Yupukari, Kicumbay, St. Ignatius and Karasabi. A well was also activated in Nappi and a 430 gallon storage tank provided to the community of Marakanata, where a new distribution network was installed.
Other ongoing interventions include the installation of Photovoltaic Systems to pump water to communities, improving productivity and increasing storage capacity of wells, water quality testing and the construction of trestles.
