Tourism ministry eyes ‘glamping’ at Region Two lakes

The Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce will soon conduct an assessment to explore the potential for luxurious outdoor camping, known as ‘glamping’ at Mainstay, Capoey, and Mashabo in Region Two.

This initiative is a key component of the ministry’s strategy to elevate Region Two into a leading tourism destination.

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Oneidge Walrond made the announcement during an outreach to Mainstay/Whyaka and Capoey on Tuesday.

The visit to the lakes follows the vice president’s recent trip to the region, where there was significant interest in exploring tourism opportunities.

Minister Walrond noted that the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) has been working with communities on tourism training. Areas like Mainstay and Capoey have also benefitted, creating a wider interest in the sector.

The agency has also been helping people to develop and promote their tourism products.

According to Minister Walrond, some 300 persons have been trained in the different communities in areas such as tourism management, and mixology.

“People are seeing the work we have been doing in the country. They are seeing a rapid expansion of tourism committees [and] they want to tap in. Lake Mainstay is already a great hub for tourism but there’s just so much more potential,” she told the Department of Public Information (DPI).

The toshaos are on board to build the tourism capacity within the areas.

The minister stated that tourism is everybody’s business as more visitors means more economic opportunities.

“It’s not about bringing in a big international investor, but it’s for the people themselves to build out their tourism product as well,” she asserted.

Community members were allowed to share their ideas and concerns with the minister, and her team. Follow-ups are expected to be done soon.
