Youths urged to take their education seriously

― enjoy your youth

Scores of Guyanese flocked to the Durban Park, Friday evening to witness the hoisting of the “Golden Arrowhead” marking 49 years since Guyana became a republic nation.
The night began with vendors setting up their stalls, the men and women in uniform getting ready for their display, the security forces doing their checks, and families taking their seats to bear witness to the planned program to mark the occasion.
As the night progressed, there was certainly a feeling of patriotism as citizens could be seen either wearing the national colours or waving their flags.
The Department of Public Information spoke with some of those in the audience who relayed their excitement and joy of being a part of the occasion.
Carl Roberts from Georgetown says 49 years is a big year “respect to all the Guyanese here tonight” …” we are just hoping that year 2020 would be great for our nation…one people one nation one destiny, we would all be glad for everybody to unite and be one instead of being segregated”
Maxine Paris from South Ruimveldt says the flag raising is “us becoming a republic. It is significant, being able to celebrate 49 years is an achievement … I’m here basking in the moment”
Evelyn Paris says at 80 years old she has borne witness to the ups and downs of the nationhood, and thought the entire programme for the 49th Republic Anniversary a beautiful one. “I’m thoroughly enjoying it.” Paris had some sage words of advice for the youths, “education is very important for their development… they must make good choices when it comes to friendship and do things which will make the nation proud.”
Serettee Mc Allister says he is especially proud to be Guyanese, “Guyana says it all, as a Guyanese you are supposed to be proud of everything Guyanese. To the young people; be patriotic, be more interested in your country, be more involved in decision making because you are the people who will effect change.
Before the night ended with the hoisting of the flag and massive fireworks, Prime Minister, Moses Nagamootoo was given the General Salute, which made way for President, David Granger, to take the Presidential Salute by Guard of Honour.
