Canadian High Commissioner (Designate) Calls on Foreign Minister
High Commissioner (Designate) of Canada to the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, His Excellency Mark Kevin Berman, today called on Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Honourable Hugh Todd.
They discussed areas of mutual interest, including enhanced bilateral cooperation, the ongoing health crisis, sustainable development, and increasing opportunities f or the private sector.
Minister Todd welcomed His Excellency to Guyana and expressed his confidence in the ability of the High Commissioner (Designate) to further strengthen relations between Guyana and Canada.
In turn, the High Commissioner (Designate) stated that he looks forward to working closely with the Government during his tenure.
The establishment of formal diplomatic relations between Guyana and Canada predated Guyana’s independence with the opening of the High Commission of Canada in Georgetown, in March 1964. These relations were f ully formalized on the occasion of Guyana’s independence. The two countries often collaborate closely at the international level within the ambits of the Commonwealth, the United Nations, the Organization of American States (OAS), and the Lima Group. Canada is also a member of the Commonwealth Ministerial Group on Guyana, in support of the safeguarding of Guyana’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
