DPI, Guyana, Saturday, May 26, 2018
Cuyuni-Mazaruni’s progress was commended as the region observed Guyana’s 52nd Independence Anniversary with a cultural program and a Flag Raising ceremony at the Bartica Stelling Square.
Addressing the gathering Minister within the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Karen Cummings said Guyana launched itself as a proud independent nation 52 years ago and continues to make ardent strides towards establishing itself as a developed progressive nation. This proves that no region will be left behind in the forward movement.
“Fifty-two years ago, we became independent, free of colonial rule… this government is committed to leaving a legacy of which we all can be proud…”
Minister Cummings noted that as the country is expecting major returns from the potential oil and gas sector, “Government will ensure this is invested in the country’s needs. (which are) transformative educational opportunities, a world-class economic and social infrastructure and the strengthening of the national security system.”
Regional Chairman Gordon Bradford and Mayor, Gifford Marshall highlighted the fact that several transformational projects have served to promote Bartica as a model green town which in turn has attracted economic investments and tourism to the region at large. It was observed that this “greening” of Bartica will set the pace for modernity throughout the country and put Guyana on the “threshold of becoming a fully developed country, without abusing its natural resources.”
“Bartica is no longer a village, we are now at a new stage, we are destined for greater things,” Mayor Gifford said.
Reflecting on the timeline of Guyana’s independence, the Regional Chairman Gordon Bradford also noted that Cuyuni-Mazaruni is on a steady path to modern development.
