DPI, Guyana, Thursday, December 12, 2019

Vibrant colours jumped off the canvases and the sculptures seem to come to life on Thursday evening as the Guyana Women’s Artists’ Association (GWAA) hosted its 31st annual art exhibition.

The event which was hosted at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre displayed the creative talent of the women in various mediums including oil, ink and watercolour paintings, ceramics, sculpture, textile and various mixed media pieces.

Each stroke of the brush, each line chiselled, told a story which captivated the art enthusiasts in attendance. The art was not confined to the walls and pedestals as attendees were left in awe at the fashionable pieces modelled.

Among those in attendance was Minister of Public Telecommunications, Hon. Catherine Hughes who congratulated the GWAA for their stick-to-itiveness’ as one of the oldest art associations not only in Guyana but in the Caribbean as well.

“This to me is the greatest evidence of your perseverance and determination to keep believing in the importance of art, artistry and the creative industry in all of our lives,” Minister Hughes remarked.

She noted that while the love of art is a passion, it is time for the industry to be transformed into a lucrative one. Highlighting that Guyana on the edge of economic transformation, the Telecommunications Minister artists called on the women artist to take advantage of the opportunities which will be presented.  She explained that with many companies establishing offices in Guyana, artists should market themselves to have their work displayed in these buildings.

Noting that the holiday season is here Minister Hughes also suggested that should consider gifting a one-of-a-kind piece from the art pieces on display.

President of the GWAA, Carol Fraser explained that the theme of the event – “Rhythm of our Journey II” – is in keeping with the vision of their founders as it presented the progress of the artists’ work.

The Association was founded in 1987 and hosted its first Exhibition in 1988.
