Historic first meeting of the Cabinet Sub-Committee on Small Business

Monday, August 15, 2016 – GEORGETOWN – Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo met with the Minister of Business, Dominic Gaskin and Minister within the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Annette Ferguson to discuss the involvement of small businesses and contractors in the Public Procurement Process.

The Cabinet Sub-Committee on Small Business was established in July 2016 following concerns raised by small businesses and contractors at a symposium held by the Ministry of Public Infrastructure. The sub-committee will look at how best small businesses and contractors can be incorporated in the government’s procurement process.

The Cabinet Sub-Committee on Small Business members are Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo (Chairman); Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Basil Williams, Minister Dominic Gaskin, Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, Minster of Communities Ronald Bulkan and Minister of Finance, Winston Jordan.

Among issues discussed were the Public Procurement Act and how small businesses and contractors can be given contracts without compromising quality. Also highlighted is the need for the empowerment of small businesses and contractors, fair and equal distribution of contracts once persons would have complied with necessary regulations.

Minister Ferguson represented Minister Patterson who is overseas and other members of the committee were unavoidably unavailable.
