IWD Celebrations – MOSP
On March 8, 2018 The Ministry of Social Protection amalgamated with women of all sectors as they celebrated the global event of International Women’s Day under theme “Time is now: Rural and Urban Activists transforming Women’s Lives”.
The Ceremony was ably held at the Rahaman’s Parc Rayne.
Amongst the highlights of the ceremony were First Lady of the Cooperative Republic, Mrs. Sandra Granger, Hon. Amna Ally – Minister of Social Protection, Her Excellency Lillian Chatterjee – Canadian High Commissioner and Mr. Adler Bynoe of the United Nation Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA). They encouraged women to use their voice in their influential sphere to impact the growth and development of the nation.
Minister Amna Ally, revealed that Gender Policy which has been in the pipeline for some time now would be launched sometime this year. While First Lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger certainly made an impact with her factoids which divulged information on how investing in the lives girls and women makes a value added nation.
From the Guyana Police Force Steel Pan Rendition of Bruno Mars’ ‘Just the way you are’, to the encouraging words of Cherlyn Maloney’s ‘Don’t be Discouraged’ to the WIST Dance Ministry Pulsating performance, these are what made International Women’s Day 2018 a surreal experience.
However, the true highlight of the ceremony was the ‘I AM WOMAN’ production which was brilliantly conceptualized by Lloyda Garret. ‘I AM WOMAN’ showcased women from all walks of life, their thoughts, feelings, their struggles and suggested how they can begin to see themselves in a brighter light. The production was culturally presented through dance, dramatic poetry and singing.
This production also featured the Calypso sensation Onika Nelson, reigning calypso monarch 2018, with her song ‘Woman is Boss’ which caused a state of jubilant uproar for all women present. It was the steal of the event.
The International Women’s Day ceremony culminated with the handing over of the Women’s Organization in Guyana to the Minister of Social Protection who then handed over copies to several partners of the Ministry.
The Ministry of Social Protection under the leadership of Honorable Amna Ally, continues to look for avenues for betterment of women, men and children to create strong communities; strong families; building a better nation and a brighter future.
Celebration of women continue tomorrow Saturday March 10th at the Promenade Gardens at 15:00hrs; all are invited.
