Legal Luminaries from across the Caribbean to attend Council of Legal Education (CLE) meeting

─ fifth hosting of meetings of CLE Executive Committee in Guyana

─ establishment of the JOF Haynes Law School to be discussed

─ President Granger to deliver remarks at opening of meeting on September 7

The Government in collaboration with the Council of Legal Education (CLE) will be hosting meetings of the Executive Committee and Council of Legal Education for the fifth time in Guyana from September 6-8 at the Guyana Marriott Hotel, Kingston, Georgetown.

Sixty participants have confirmed attendance at the meetings, where a number of matters are expected to be discussed. Some of these include a feasibility study for the establishment of the JOF Haynes Law School in Guyana and the recommendations of the review committee as well as the Impact Justice Report and recommendations for legal education in the Caribbean.

Implications arising from proposals for other law schools in Jamaica, Antigua and Barbuda and Barbados are also top of the agenda.

Chairman of the CLE, a representative of the Caribbean Court of Justice, Attorneys General, Chief Justices from CARICOM Member States, Members of the Bar Association and Principals of the three Law Schools located in Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and the Bahamas will be in attendance.

On September 6, a Special Meeting of the Executive Committee will be held at 09:30hours at the Marriott Hotel. Members of this committee are the CLE Chairman, Attorneys General and Principals of the Law Schools.

President David Granger will address the opening of the Meeting of the Council of Legal Education on September 7 which commences at 09:30 hours.  Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Basil Williams, SC., MP, as the host will deliver welcome remarks.

Chairman of the Council of Legal Education, Reginald Armour, SC, is also expected to deliver remarks.

Additionally, on the evening of September 7, the AG Williams will host a Reception and Cultural event at the Umana Yana at 19:00 hours in honour of the participants.

The Council of Legal Education Meeting will continue on September 8.

These meetings were held here during the years 1975, 1981, 1987 and 1994, respectively.
