―Scores of residents benefit from a plethora of services

DPI, Guyana, Thursday, April 25, 2019

The call to rekindle the health practices of the older generations was issued at a health fair hosted during this year’s Linden Town Week.

Making the appeal was Government Medical Officer Delon Daly, who said, “In Guyana, we have certain cultures that we should uphold from the previous generations. We need to renew these and inspire new cultures, in this present generation.  I want Lindeners to embrace proper eating habits, consume more vegetables and home cooked, balanced meals, less sugary foods and incorporate exercise into their daily routine.”

Daly who is attached to the Linden Hospital Complex (LHC), also served as a coordinator of the Health Fair held on April 24. He posited that millennials are gravitating towards the consumption of fast food and other unhealthy eating habits that need to be checked since that could lead to a growing unhealthy generation. “The aim of the fair is to orient persons on good health practices and how they can better care for themselves,” he added.

Several health organisations and NGO’s participated in the health fair, which is an annual feature on the LTW calendar of activities. The Linden Hospital Complex, however, was the main participant with over five of its departments present to render various services to residents.

Some of the booths represented were the Guyana Cancer Society, the Mental Health Department at LHC, the tuberculosis department at the Upper Demerara Hospital, the LHC laboratory that was performing various testing, the Ministry of Health Environmental Health Department, the For the Children Sake Foundation focusing on sexual health, LHC Eye Care, the Diabetes Foot Centre and the Wisroc Policing Youth Group.

Additionally, the issue of environmental pollution and how it affects our health was highlighted through a dramatic presentation by the Merundoi Drama Group. The skit showed Lindeners who face the age-old problem of dust pollution due to bauxite mining, how they can address it by ensuring their environment is kept clean.

Scores of Lindeners flocked the venue to benefit from the many services that were offered at the fair.
