Region Eight to Establish Community Policing Group

Toshao Edward Mc Garrell and Councillors of Chenapou, met with the Minister of Public Security Hon. Khemraj Ramjattan on February 28 2019, to establish a Community Policing Group (CPG) in Chenapou, Region Eight.

The team was briefed by Minister Ramjattan and the Administrator of Community Policing, Mr. Dennis Pompey, on the Standard Operation Procedures, the Constitution and the Code of Conduct for Community Policing in Guyana. Community Policing is premised on the Constitution of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana Act 1980 Article 32 and 33 which States that: –

“It is the joint duty of the State, the society and every citizen to combat and prevent crime and other violations of the law and to take care of and protect public property.” Further, “It is the duty of every citizen to defend the State.”

The team received membership forms and CPG uniforms to further advance the process of establishing a Community Policing Group in Chenapou.

Chenapou is an Indigenous community in Region Eight with approximately six hundred and twenty residents (620).  It is located on the Bank of the Potaro River in the vicinity of Kaieteur Falls. Deputy Toshao Mr. Derek Williams, Secretary Ms. Ann Skybar, and Treasure Ms. Delores John, also participated in meeting.

Minister Ramjattan expressed his gratitude to the team and assured them that the Ministry will continue to work with all communities across Guyana, to ensure the safety of all Guyanese.

The Ministry is actively resuscitating and forming CPG groups in interior locations in view of increase activity in these areas, and the need to supplement the Guyana Police Force in areas where there are no Police Station.
