Region Nine Toshaos and Councillors to receive stipend increase

Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Hon. Nigel Dharamlall, has announced that Toshaos and senior Councillors from Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) will soon receive an increase in their stipends.

The Minister made this disclosure during the Consideration of Budget Estimates today.

The Local Government Minister said a request for special consideration to be given to members of the Regional Democratic Council and people manning the COVID-19 checkpoints would be dealt with under the pandemic relief measures.

“We have to feed our people and we will provide food hampers to the Amerindians and everyone in this country.  We will soon begin to distribute the $25,000 cash grant to every household in this country,” Minister Dharamlall said.

Additionally, $20 million allocated for regional administration and to finance capital expenditure will be used to renovate the accommodations for the Deputy Regional Executive Officer, construct washrooms and office space for three security huts in Lethem, Aishalton, and Karasabai, and a sanitary block at Aishalton and other works.
