Region Three hosts regional awards 2017/2018

– after a lull of two years

In an atmosphere of celebration, the Region Three’s Department of Education hosted its Annual Regional Award Ceremony after a lull of two years.  The event was held under the theme, “Rewarding Success and Dedication” at the Aracari Resort, Plantation Versailles West Bank Demerara.

Delivering opening remarks was the Regional Education Officer, Annesta Douglas who commended the staff of her department for making this activity a success.  “This is a long overdue activity; we were unable to facilitate for two years but today I am proud to stand before you and thank all my staff in ensuring the success of this the 2017/2018 Region Three Department of Education Ceremony,” Douglas said.

In invited comments, the Regional Executive Officer Denis Jaikaran said, “As long as I remain the Regional Executive Officer of this region we will continue to have this ceremony yearly. We must continue to recognise the accomplishments of our children, pupils and students. In order to ensure the encouragement of our people, more ceremonies of this nature must be facilitated.”

Special guest speaker First Lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger in her feature address delivered strong words of encouragement to the young awardees in attendance. “Stay in school young girls, educate yourself, empower yourself and that will lead to an enrichment of yourself. Boys the same goes for you…. Education is the key.”

For the pupils and students, trophies and plaques were given to the Top Performers for the National Grade Two Assessment, National Grade Four Assessment, National Grade Six Assessment (Top 10 in the Region), National Grade Six Assessment  (In the Essequibo and Demerara River), National Grade Nine Assessment, Secondary Competency Certificate Programme, Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (C-SEC), Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate, The Arts and the top performers from each Secondary School for C-SEC 2017 and 2018.

Teachers were also recognised for their service and dedication to the profession. Awards were present to the Overall Top Performers who completed the Trained Teachers Certificate at the Cyril Potter College of Education in the field of Nursery, Primary and Secondary Education for 2017 and 2018.

Teachers who completed the Education Management Certificate Programme for 2015-2017 and educators with 27 years or more years of unbroken service were also honoured. Retired teachers were also recognised for their sterling contributions. The Most Improved School in the Nursery, Primary and Secondary categories along with Champion Athletes both students and teachers also received due recognition.
