DPI, Guyana, Thursday, April 25, 2019
Persons residing in communities within Trafalgar/Union, on the West Coast of Berbice, were pleased to meet their Government Ministers and voice their concerns. The cheerful atmosphere was very visible on Thursday evening, during a ministerial visit by Minister of Public Health, Volda Lawrence and Junior Minister of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Valerie Garrido-Lowe.
Earlier in the day, both ministers were part of the fifth ‘Government comes to you’ outreach. The successful initiative was held at the Regional Democratic Council’s compound and saw hundreds of Region 5 residents leaving satisfied with the service they received.
At the Trafalgar/Union Community Center where the meeting was held, Minister within the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Valerie Garrido-Lowe reminded the residents of the numerous developmental changes Guyana has seen, particularly in Mahaica-Berbice. Minister Garrido-Lowe remains adamant that since the coalition took office in 2015, the great transformation that Guyana sees now can in no way be compared to what was done by the previous administration’s 23 years.
Also addressing the gathering, Minister Lawrence urged the residents to ignore all the lies and negative comments from individuals bent on making trouble, especially those made about the oil and gas sector.
“I want you to remember how far we have travelled over the last four years. In every region, there has been development, and I know, before these four years we had no hope for any development in our communities… What this government wants to do is put all systems in place to ensure we have access to proper roadways, to make sure our educational system is reviewed and revamped, and our health system upgraded,” Minister Lawrence reiterated.
During the interactive session, the ministers heard that there is a need for a water treatment plant in the area. The installation of street lights and the maintenance of drains and canals were also raised.
At the end of the discussions, both ministers assured the residents that their concerns would not be ignored; but will be forwarded to the relevant ministries and agencies to be addressed.
